Does public speaking make you really nervous?
Me too!
This year, I decided to do something about it. When I learned that a brand new Toastmasters club was starting up at Expeditors, I decided to face my fear and start attending.
At the meetings, I found a supportive, learn-by-doing environment where members give short speeches. Every meeting also provides chances to practice speaking by performing a role: leading the meeting, tracking time, evaluating a speech, asking members questions, or responding to a question. We even have someone counting Ah’s and Um’s to help us eliminate them from our speaking. The neat thing is that everyone is there to practice.
Our club, Toastpeditors (get it?), meets every other Tuesday at 12:05pm. The meetings are only 1 hour (locations vary). Most of our members are brand new to Toastmasters, so we are all learning the ropes together. I encourage you to come check out a meeting for yourself. If you decide to join there are dues, however, it seems worth every penny. And you get training credit!
